In this Channel 7 segment, I discuss the psychological impact of global uncertainty and how to protect your mental health when the news feels relentless and the world feels unstable. Our nervous systems are designed to respond to threat and then recover. The difficulty of a continuous 24/7 news cycle is that recovery becomes functionally impossible: the threat feels constant and ambient, shaped by rising costs, geopolitical instability, and a persistent sense that the forces shaping our lives are entirely outside our control. There is no clear moment of resolution, and that creates a state of low-grade chronic stress that affects mood, sleep, concentration, and our sense of safety. Children are particularly perceptive to adult distress; they absorb anxiety even when adults say nothing. In this conversation, I share practical strategies for protecting mental wellbeing without disengaging from the world: setting intentional news windows rather than monitoring continuously, using movement as an evidence-based tool for regulating anxiety, staying connected to trusted people, and finding the edges of your actual influence as an antidote to helplessness. Even the smallest forms of local agency are among the most powerful resources available to us when the world feels out of control.
